This 1,600-Year-Old Goblet Shows that the Romans Were Nanotechnology Pioneers | History & Archaeology | Smithsonian Magazine.

The ancient Romans ground silver and gold so fine that when impregnated in the glass, the nanoparticles’ vibrations would change the cup’s color depending on what it contained, with greater sensitivity than modern chemical sensors.  It seems to me that it could have been used to detect poison.
